Beverly Hills, CA May 29th 2005- Nearly four hundred bidders from across the world, including 227 eBay bidders, took part in today’s highly-successful sale. Rare and valuable vases, porcelain wares and carvings from China- most dating back centuries, were among the many stunning items brought to the auction block.
Of particular interest was the rare and beautifully detailed antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Famille Rose enameled porcelain dish of foliate shape, possessing the Jiajing Mark and of the Period, which sold for an impressive $35,250.00. Another offering from the Yuan Dynasty was a very rare Blue and White porcelain jar. The lovely piece, beautifully decorated with large blossoms and florals, sold for $58,750.00.
From the Warring States Period (475 BCE-221 BCE), the sale offered a massive archaic bronze ding and cover with bands of stylized interlocking geometric scroll pattern. This piece sold for $17,625.00.
Many items from across the world generated quite the buzz. At the forefront of the Western lots was an important Art Deco dancer by the famous Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947). The exquisite piece, entitled “Dourga”, with carved ivory “skin” and clad in a gilt bronze body suite and cap sold for $41,125.00.
Several items from China’s Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE) sold. Among them, a fahua glazed pottery meiping vase with molded lotus blossoms, circa 1500. This piece sold for $8,812.50. Another stunning 16th Century Ming Dynasty item was a lovely Blue and White porcelain bowl with the Wanli period. The artifact possessed numerous interior and exterior long life characters. This item sold for $3,525.00. A glazed Ming Dynasty “tile- works” pottery figure of a guardian with helmet sold for $1,410.00.
Snuff bottle collectors were ecstatic with the eclectic group of these famed containers offered today. Two of the many offerings were a finely carved black jade Suzhou School-type snuff bottle with a monkey hanging from a peach tree. This item sold for $2,585.00. Another intricate piece was an antique carved rock crystal snuff bottle in the form of a recumbent swan. This piece sold for $1,233.75.
