Lot 201

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - If I.M. Chait’s November 4th line up of Asian and International properties is any indication – the holiday season is going to begin early for a lot of collectors and gift givers. The nearly 400 highly dynamic desirable offerings include rare and beautiful examples of Chinese porcelains from an Australian estate, ivory carvings from a single owner collection, as well as 19th and 20th century Japanese cloisonné and bronzes, white jades and wood carvings (deleteof the 19th and 20th centuries to here) and a collection of pre-Columbian pottery from various esteemed California estates.

Additionally, exquisite and important jewels plus works on paper by Japanese woodblock printmakers and Russian and American painters help make this a spectacular auction.

The marquee offering is Lot 196, a superb 18th Century Imperial Qianlong jar with original cover. Decorated with blue and white lotus blossoms and scrolling foliage, the twenty inch tall period jar bearing the Qianlong mark is expected to command as much as $40,000 or more.

Lot 196

Several remarkable ivory and jade properties hover at the auction’s second highest estimate, $25,000. For example Lot 199 is a three-tiered ivory pagoda set on a tripod censer with legs featuring ogre masks. At the first tier is a circular frieze of the Eighteen Lohan and two loop handles. Above that rise the Guardians of the Four Directions and above that, four Buddha. Lot 200 is a seven-foot long carved ivory tusk bridge standing on four legs. Soaring from the zenith of its arc is an intricately articulated double level pagoda. Lot 198 is a pair of Chinese white jade table screens, each slightly over two feet tall, with matching figural scenes of landscapes and waterfront pavilions. Their even color is dramatized by ornate openwork carved hardwood frames.

Lot 199

A pair ( Lot 201 pictured top) of monumental ivory phoenix birds holding peonies in their mouths graces the catalog cover. Standing in clusters of blossoming peonies that reach out and away from the main body of the carving, the 44 inch tall sculptures embody the feeling of spring and nature at its finest. The pair is expected to fetch as much as $25,000.

A collection of over twenty modestly valued Japanese cloisonné vases, boxes and plates will make deciding which to acquire a delightful exercise. Lot 82, for example, is a pair of yellow cloisonné enamel vases festooned with colorful water birds and riverbank flowers. The silver rimmed vases signed with Fuji marks carry a high estimate of $1,500. Drastically different in design and feel is Lot 83, a pair of Japanese cloisonné vases decorated with colorful geometrics. Circa 1900, they are set to go off at about $1,000.

Lot 83

The mostly 19th and early 20th century Japanese wood and bronze items are models of animals. Lot 259, which typifies the carved wood collection, is of two puppies gamboling about, one with a ball in its mouth. Signed, its high estimate is $1000. Lot 272 is a large parcel gilt bronze group of roosters and hens standing on a rockery. Mounted on a marble base, it is estimated at a high of $2500.

Lot 259

Lot 218 and Lot 221A reflect the strength of the Pre-Columbian collection. The former is a Mexican pottery figure, possibly from Veracruz. The stylized standing figure wears pants, headdress, a long necklace and other jewelry. At 31 ½ inches tall, it is estimated at between $6500 and $8000. Lot 221A is a Nicoya, Costa Rica figural vessel with a round human head protruding from the vessel’s neck. The vessel stands on human legs, one of which is bent, the other kneeling. Polychromed with glyph designs, it is valued at between $1200 and $1500.

Lot 218

Art works in the auction include Lot 320, a David Davidovich Cherson Burliuk oil-on-canvas. Signed and dated 1959, the coastal landscape with gentleman walking carries a high estimate of $7,000. Lot 187, a large woodblock print by Yoshida featuring a skyscape of rolling clouds with misty mountain tops and a fading sunset is estimated at $2,000 to $3,000. Lot 186, three classic Hiroshige woodblock prints are exceptionally well valued at between $800 to $1000. Lot 326, two 2001 encaustic works on panel by the American contemporary painter Bill Zima, one entitled "Dubar,” the other entitled "Babo" are expected to command a high of $2,000.

Lot 320

Finally, the collection of important estate jewels is sparkling. Lot 294, a pair of signed Tiffany & Co. platinum and diamond stud earrings features a round brilliant cut center diamond surrounded by a row of smaller diamonds. The earrings carry a $25,000 to $30,000 estimate. Lot 298, a signed Van Cleef and Arpels white gold and diamond bangle bracelet is expected to command a high of $8,000. The men’s jewelry includes a pair of vintage cuff links ( Lot 283). The drama of a round diamond set in the center of a white gold mound is intensified by surrounding smaller round diamonds. The high estimate on these is $8,000.

Lot 294
