Beverly Hills, CA - I.M. Chait's July 10 Asian and International Fine Arts Auction features items from seven single owner collections. Many of the Chinese carved jades and Chinese porcelains in the sale were originally sold by Chait and have come full circle. A collection of fine Continental Art Deco Sculptures are also Chait curated.
Well rounded, with a collection of jewelry, Japanese decorative items and Continental paintings, the sale will stand among summer's most important.
The day's most highly sought jadeite carving is a pale lavender and icy green Guanyin with an openwork mandorla. The unusual richness of the jadeite gives a transcendental cast to the robed figure that stands twenty-two inches tall and is mounted on a wire inlaid wood stand. It isOf the more than 30 carved jadeites, the focus is on Lot 229 and is estimated to fetch $35,000 or more.
Among the deep hue jades, a spinach green jade table screen takes top honors for quality and craftsmanship. The elaborate carvings on the plaque depict traditional rockery and a landscape of pine trees with pavilions. Gilt inscriptions add to the overall significance. The screen is set in an ornately scrolled openwork wood stand. It is Lot 219 , a large double brushpot of celadon jade. In high relief on the tree-trunk form are carvings of a crane amid plum blossoms and pine branches as well as a stand of bamboo. The 7½ inch brushpot carries a catalog value of $25,000 or more.
Lot 220, is an exquisite three-tier Moghul style censer of celadon jade that sports elaborately carved lotus blossom handles, one with rings. A close look at the body reveals stylized lotus blossoms amid a network of vines. The celadon incense burner is valued at around $20,000.
An apple green jadeite featuring a flock of sparrows amid lotus blossoms heavy with fruit is yet another highlight. Lot 222, the openwork sculpture is nearly ten inches tall and stands on a base of dark wood. The elaborate carving should fetch upwards of $15,000.
Collectors who love the decorative and tactile quality of carved jadeite will find the gold and bracelet with 8 jadeite charms to their taste. It is Lot 350 and would be a good buy at $3,000.
Among the Chinese ceramics, the must-see item is Lot 210 a 14th Century Yuan blue and white charger with traditional design of lotus blossoms flanking a center palm. It is measures 15 ¾ inches and comes from an important Japanese collection. It is estimated to sell at $50,000 or more.
Lot 206 is an extraordinary example of period red underglaze done right. The 14th Century Chinese vase, or yuhuchunping, shows three cranes in flight, each in a different position, amid swirling clouds. The coloration on the vase is excellent. Also from an important Japanese collection, the yuhu is expected to command around $25,000.
Lot 208 is a rare Ming Dynasty, Yongle Period (1403-1425) covered jar with a "sweet white" glaze and a peach shaped knob. It carries an overall anhua (hidden decoration) incised design of scrolling lotus. The jar is moderately estimated at $25,000 to $30,000.
Both before and after these items, buyers will find a broad range of Chinese ceramics dating from the Ming Dynasty to the Guanzxu Period of the 19th Century as well as Chinese pottery from the Northern Qi Dynasty will go on the block.
Among the precious carved ivories, Lot 216 is an important sectional ivory sculpture of a phoenix perched on a branch. Highly detailed with dense foliage, the 23 ½ inch tall carving carries a moderate estimate of $18,000.
The polychromed ivory dragon boat at Lot 217 is spectacular. Its three-tiered pavilion holds dozens of children celebrating The Dragon Boat Festival. The enchanting sculpture should easily command $15,000 or more.
The ivory chess set at Lot 218 is equally as unusual. Its figures are perched atop camels, horses and elephants outfitted according to status. Complete with wood inlaid chess board and presentation case, the chess game would be a steal at around $12,000.
Numerous collections of archaic and antique Chinese bronze vessels and vases begin with Lot 427. And an extensive collection of Japanese Satsuma, lacquer boxes, prints, textiles and furniture round out the Far Eastern offerings.
Lot 407 launches the collection of eight Art Deco sculptures. Reinterpreting the classical motif of a maiden being helped from her horse by a prince, Professor Otto Poerzel's bronze and ivory sculpture should fetch $10,000 or more.
From the necklace with 65 Cts. of multi-colored tourmalines and 3 Cts. of diamonds at Lot 359 ($15,000 to $18,000) to a very wearable sapphire, aquamarine and agate tassel necklace at Lot 354 ($4,500 to $5,500), the large collection of jewelry is fit for a queen.
