RARE FOSSIL PENGUIN SKULL
Paleospheniscus biloculatus
Late Miocene
South America

This finely preserved skull is from an ancient penguin, probably an ancestor of today's Humboldt penguin, but around the size of a small Gentoo penguin, around 25 inches tall. They flourished 2-5 million years ago in the warm waters near the Equator in today's South America, with diet and behavior much like their modern relatives. This evocative skull retains excellent definition and lack of deformity to the delicate bones, and the characterful long tapering beak boasts a superb tip. With a pleasant green-gray patina throughout and fine texture, it measures 7 3/8 inches long, with hinged lower jaw, on an ebonized metal display stand and oval wooden base, 8 3/8 inches high overall.
Estimate $2,500-3,500
