RARE BABY TRICERATOPS SKULL - "PINKY"
Triceratops prorsus
Cretaceous, Maastrichtian Stage
Hell Creek Formation, near Yellowstone Co., Montana

A magnificent juvenile skull from one of the most popular of all dinosaurs, this exceptional fossil hails from the famed Hell Creek Formation of north-eastern Montana. A classic Cretaceous dinosaur, the Triceratops roamed the plains of North America in vast herds just prior to the KT extinction event of 65 million years ago. This specimen belonged to a very young animal - in adults, the skull could grow up to 8 feet in length, almost a third of the overall body length, and one of the largest skulls of any land animal. Commensurate with its size, the skull also boasts delightful little nose and brow horns, the beginnings of the fenestrae in the frill, and a several deep brown teeth. The bones show some distortion but are beautifully formed, with wonderful texture and warm brown patination, making for a highly characterful and aesthetic specimen, approximately 25 inches long, raised on a steel-banded ebonized wooden stand, 25 1/2 inches high overall.
Estimate $25,000-35,000
