SUPERB & MASSIVE WOOLLY RHINOCEROS SKELETON
ex. Kashiwagi Museum Collection
Coelodonta antiquitatis
Pleistocene, Quaternary Period
Siberia

This exceptional specimen was excavated from the wilds of Siberia where, during the last Ice Age, giant megafauna with thick wooly coats roamed and grazed. This magnificent rhinoceros would originally have had such a coat, and coexisted with the famous woolly mammoth, surviving, it is believed, up to 8,000 years BCE. One of the few Pleistocene megafauna to appear in primitive human cave paintings, having survived the Ice Age, it is posited that hunting was at least partially responsible for the creature's extinction, valued not only for its meat, but also for its thick pelt. The Latin name means "hollow tooth" for the unusual characteristic of their hollow molars. This is a highly impressive specimen, with a magnificent, curving brow horn, 35 3/8 inches long, that boasts a wonderfully rugose texture. The bones display superb texture and sandy patination throughout, from the excellent, undistorted skull with its large blocky teeth, to the characterful dorsal spines that supported the animal's fat reserve hump. Mounted on a discrete ebonized metal armature, it is literally a museum-class specimen, hailing originally from the collection of the Kashiwagi Museum in Japan, and measures approximately 177 inches long, and 72 inches high.
Estimate $90,000-120,000
