SEPTARIAN APPLE
Upper Jurassic
Ulyanovsk and Saratov region, Volga River, Russia
Septarian nodules are formed by the calcification of natural fissures in dried mud, hardened over millennia into stone. The calcite here has a rich dark honey coloring, dramatically contrasting with the slate gray ground, charmingly carved into the form of an apple with bronze stalk and leaves, 8 inches wide.
