RARE FEATHER IN AMBER
Cretaceous
Hukawng Valley, Myanmar

This remarkable cabochon is 99 million years old, from Myanmar (Burma), one of the few locations in the world to have amber old enough possibly to contain dinosaur material. The distinction in evolutionary terms between birds and dinosaurs is blurred at this stage, but the structure of this particular feather suggests that it belonged to a dinosaur, a remarkable feat of delicate preservation held forever in suspended animation in a golden cabochon 3/4 inches wide.
