ELEPHANT BIRD EGG
Aepyornis maximus
Madagascar

The extinct, flightless elephant bird produced the largest egg of any animal, including dinosaurs. Its colloquial name was coined by Marco Polo in his account of 1298, where he describes the ten foot tall bird with talons large enough to seize an elephant. There are only about a dozen unbroken aepyornis eggs in existence; most are reconstructed from fragments as here (65% from a single egg). Believed to be 10,000-20,000 years old, this example measures 11 1/4 inches high, presented on a wooden stand.
