SPLIT PYRITIZED AMMONITE
Speetoniceras sp.
Jurassic, Oxfordian stage
Volga River, Russia
In one small area along the Volga River, 160 million year old ammonites are found with their entire shell turned to shimmering, silvery pyrite. Sliced open and polished, the gleaming border creates a dramatic contrast with the rich black filling of the chambers, as here, each approximately 12 1/4 inches wide.
