FOSSIL STINGRAY
Heliobatus radians
Eocene
Green River Formation, Lincoln Co., Wyoming

The 50 million-year-old lake beds of Green River, Wyoming are renowned for their exquisitely preserved fish, and one of the rarest and most sought-after of these fossils is the stingray. With their easily-missed flat bodies and tiny, delicate bones, such rays are rarely found, and are usually incomplete. The present example is an attractive specimen 7 inches wide, with fine detail and three-dimensionality to the spine and tail barb, in soft orange-brown on a creamy 18 3/4 x 12 inch matrix.
