FOSSIL MOONFISH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE
Gyrodus hexagonus
Jurassic, Tithonian stage
Solnhofen Formation, Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany

A 150 million year old relative of today's parrotfish, this charming little Gyrodus positive and negative is from one of the most renowned collecting localities in the world, the lithographic limestone of Solnhofen in southern Germany. The detail here is typically excellent, with good three-dimensionality and a lovely soft orange-brown patina, 6 inches long in a pair of creamy limestone matrices.
