MASSIVE PAINTED & LACQUERED WOOD SCREEN: Sixteen Arhats
Antique Japanese painted and lacquered panel, of the sixteen Arhats gathered below a sinuous dragon, rendered in striking detail; mounted in later, massive Chinese carved and lacquered wood screen, of rectangular form, flanked by archaistic dragon flanges and set upon elaborate scrolled feet; the frame decorated in intricate keyfret patterning, with landscape panels and reserved characters to the stand; Provenance: Estate of Franklin Klein, thence by descent to the present owner; accompanied by a photograph of the piece in Mr. Klein's manor in the English countryside, circa 1938; H: 4' 6 1/2"
